Each year the 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiment provides a color guard for the District of Columbia Division's annual commemoration of the birth of Confederate General Robert Edward Lee. Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC), a surprise attendee at this year's celebration, delivered an impromptu speech on the legacy of the Confederate soldier and posed for pictures afterwards with members of the 42nd in Statuary Hall.
